Fuse Board & Consumer Unit Upgrades

If your fuse board still has rewireable fuses, no RCD protection, or it's mounted on a wooden backboard, it's almost certainly not compliant with current regulations. A modern consumer unit protects every circuit from earth faults — the difference between a tripped breaker and a serious shock.

What's included

  • Removal of old fuse board / consumer unit
  • Supply and installation of new metal-clad 18th Edition CU
  • Full RCD or RCBO protection on every circuit
  • Surge protection device (recommended)
  • Full test of all existing circuits before energising
  • Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)
  • Building control notification (Part P)

How it works

  1. 1

    Photos or visit

Most upgrades can be quoted from a photo of your existing fuse board and the surrounding area. Or we pop round for 10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Fixed-price quote

Written quote, including the cost of any remedial work the existing circuits need to pass certification.

  3. 3

    One-day install

Most fuse board upgrades are completed in a single day. Power is off for around 4–6 hours.

  4. 4

    Test and certify

Every existing circuit is tested before being reconnected. You get the EIC and Part P notification by email.

Pricing

A straight swap on a domestic property is typically a fixed price including labour, materials and certification. If the existing circuits need any remedial work to pass testing (e.g. damaged cabling), that's quoted upfront before the day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my fuse board needs replacing? +
Common signs: rewireable fuse wire (instead of breakers), no big test buttons (those are RCDs — yours doesn't have them), a wooden backboard, or a board labelled 'Wylex Standard' / 'MEM' from the 60s-80s. If you're not sure, send us a photo.
How long is the power off? +
Around 4–6 hours on a typical job. We can plan around freezers, work-from-home meetings, and medical equipment.
Will my old circuits still work? +
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Occasionally an old circuit fails a test (damaged cabling, dodgy joints) and needs minor repair before being reconnected. We quote any remedials before the install day so there are no surprises.
